What Are the Challenges Faced by CNC Turning Machines?
Almost every automobile type has some common parts, which are manufactured by CNC turning machines. Metal products industries also use these machines for turning tools and their functions. High precision and speed are the reasons why this machine has a significant worth in the industry. Not only it helps produce auto parts, but also surgical tools. Circular and linear productions are available in it as it works on three axes. However, there are some challenges in the usage. Those challenges create a demand for a CNC precision turning manufacturer who can manufacture for the masses.
This demand increases as soon as challenges rise for small-sized manufacturers. It shows that these machines are useful for bulk production instead of small scale. Then comes the costs, consumption level, training, and all the factors. These factors have a great impact on the production of metal parts in the industry.
Costly Production on Small Scale
If it is on a large scale, a CNC precision turning machine is good. Otherwise, it can be costly for small-scale production. It is a challenge for someone who wants to purchase this machine for the production of a few goods. Thus, this is a reason services are taken from wholesale manufacturers. Their production size is large, which covers the cost of production. Remember, the concept of economies of scale is met in bulk production. Bulk production leads to cheap production, where per-piece cost is significantly low.
Since this costly production has a direct effect on the final price of products, it is not advised to use this machine for small production sizes. There are many reasons behind that, where cost is a significant one. Likewise, a CNC precision turning machine consumes high energy for precision and detailing. As a result, the production cost has to rise. The only way to control or reduce this cost is to go for mega-production.
Low Flexibility and Limited Movements
Since it is a 3-axis machine, this element limits its tools’ movement. That means it will have low flexibility in terms of carving and design. The axis movement will be working on specific shapes like circular and cylindrical objects. Gears and other machine parts that require the circular movement of tools can be manufactured by a CNC precision turning machine. Both 2D and 3D movements can be followed by this machine. But that does not make it completely flexible. A limitation is still there in the form of tool movement.
Rotational cutting is a core job of this type of CNC machine. It is a challenge here because limited types of metal parts can be made with this tool movement. Automobiles and aerospace parts are mostly made by CNC machines. Turning machines are one of the types, which are highly involved in the production process. Their fast speed and consistent results can help achieve the required shapes of machine parts in a short time.
High Generation of Heat in Machine Tool
Since it reaches a high precision level, there is a challenge with that. When too much detailing comes, so does the rise in temperature. Heat generation in the tools makes this machine heat up soon. That is why coolant has to be there to cool down the tools. The cooling system is a mandatory part of the machine to deal with rising temperatures.
If the design of metal parts is simple, there will be less generation of heat. Working on a complex part will raise the temperature of tools. As a result, it will affect the lifespan of tools. When intense activity is performed for a long period, the rise of temperature takes place. In addition, each material needs a different type of coolant. Some require just water and some need special chemicals. It also depends upon the nature of the coolant to work on the hot tools of the machine.
Only Experts Can Operate Them
Another challenge is the training of operators for CNC precision turning machines. Not everyone can operate it because training is mandatory for that. Software types and their functions need proper learning. Only an expert can handle these machines to avoid any loss of production and energy. If a layperson tries to operate it through online learning modes, there could be problems for them. It is not child’s play, where just a little guidance can help someone.
MasterCAM, Fusion 360, and much different software are in the industry which needs complete training. To operate a CNC turning machine, skilled workers have to learn to code. This coding decides the performance level of the machine because wrong coding can cause problems. Hence, experts can deal with this machine if they have the right training and skills.
Tool Wearing in Continuous Usage
It is an extreme situation where the machine surpasses the overheating to get wearing of tools. When the tools use too much energy, they start shredding off their metal fragments. This happens when too much usage of the same part occurs. It is a challenge for the continuous users of CNC precision turning machines. In substantial production, the usage of machines is high. This means that tools need to be changed more often. If they are not changed on time, they will start wearing out. What will happen then? The production quality will be compromised.
Even, the machine has to face overloading issues as it can not work with high efficiency like it used to do. Replacement of worn-out tools will increase your productivity but also a fixed cost. This fixed cost will be the replacement cost, which was a result of worn-out tools. For instance, if a manufacturer has to produce 10,000 pieces of metal in a short time, he or she will face the wearing of the tool. It is the result of high heat generation in the machine.
In conclusion, we can say that these challenges are not a big deal for a CNC precision turning manufacturer. These challenges become a problem for a manufacturer who has a low capacity of production. A wholesaler will always have spare tools for mega-production.
